Access files easily with My Documents Toolbar

February 23, 2008

My Documents in Windows is intended to be your default place to save your documents, music and videos. If you are among them who use it almost all the time for saving and accessing your documents, music and videos, you better get more control of it. By using simple tricks, you can customize My Documents folder to work the way you like. You can also get a toolbar to access you drives and folders more easily.

Get easy access to My Documents

If you use My Documents for filing documents and also storing music and videos, you must be accessing it frequently. By getting a My Documents Toolbar on you Desktop, you can save yourself of one double-click.

Get My Documents Toolbar on the Desktop

My Documents Toolbar

1. Drag the My Documents folder lying on your Desktop to the extreme left, right or top of the Desktop depending upon your choice.
2. Once you drag the My Documents folder to an extreme edge of your Desktop [when the mouse doesn't move any further], a toolbar will appear.
3. Just drop the folder there to get your My Documents Toolbar.

Changing the position of the My Documents Toolbar

1. Right-click on the top portion of the toolbar
2. Drag it to the side of your choice
3. Avoid dragging it to the side of the Taskbar as this will only make things messy.

[If you wish to know how to get a My Documents Toolbar or any other toolbar on the Taskbar, keep reading.]

Customize My documents Toolbar

1. To adjust the width of the toolbar, drag it by its sides
2. To further customize the toolbar, right-click and choose what you want to do.
3. Use “auto-hide” to save precious space and keep the screen clean. When you wish to access My Documents Toolbar, just go to the extreme edge of the side where you saw the toolbar last. The toolbar will appear.
4. If you wish to access this toolbar without having to come to the Desktop, select “always on top” option. This way you can access this toolbar with any number of Windows open above your Desktop. Just go to the side of the toolbar. If you choose this setting, you would like to keep the toolbar in the left side. This will save you from annoyance caused by the toolbar that appears when you were trying to access the scroll bar.

My Documents Toolbar On Top

Now you have your fully-customized My Documents Toolbar that allows easy navigation and keeps your documents, files, folders, music and videos in easy reach. This saves some of your energy that you would have otherwise spent going to the Desktop and then clicking My Documents icon.

But if you are among those who wish to keep their C Drive only for the operating system and other programs, there is a way out. You can get a similar toolbar for accessing any folder or drive.

Getting a toolbar for any folder or drive

1. First get a My Documents Toolbar on the desktop. If you don’t have the My documents icon on the Desktop, you will have to get one over there and then follow the above process.
2. Right-click on the My Documents Toolbar
3 Select Toolbars option
4. Now select New Toolbar option
5. Select the drive or folder for which you want to get the toolbar
6. The new toolbar will appear at the bottom of the My Documents Toolbar
7. Divide the space of bar between the two toolbar by dragging the dividing bar
8. If you wish to keep the two toolbar separate, drag on the new toolbar outside of the existing toolbar and keep it in any side you wish to.
9. If you wish to get rid of any toolbar, right-click in an empty area of the toolbar and select “Close Toolbar”. Say if you want only D Drive in your toolbar, right-click on the My Documents Toolbar portion and select close.
